Gotland grass snake

Natrix natrix gotlandica

The Gotland grass snake is a dwarf form of the common grass snake and lives only on the island of Gotland.

Length: 60-80 cm

It has unique colour markings, but in nearly half of individuals the pattern is covered by the pigment melanin and the snake is completely black.

The species is usually to be found in lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, mossy ground and marshland, and along the coast. Its most common prey is the smooth newt, common toad and smaller fish which it catches in fresh water or on seashores.
