Summer camps at Nordens Ark

Nordens Ark runs several types of camps for children and young people. In the summer months we welcome all children from six years upwards to our summer camps. Children from all over Sweden get to experience, among other things, what it’s like to be a keeper for a day. In the camp schools, they get involved in the daily care of our animals – everything from cleaning up tiger poo to feeding maned wolves.

Our camps last from one day to several days, and there’s an exciting venture with Havets Hus (Ocean House) at Lysekil, in which you’ll meet animals that live in the sea and those that live on land. The camps are tailored to the age of the children.

Our different camps

How would you like to stroke a sheep or a snake? Are you brave enough to spend a night in the forest? Come on a summer camp at Nordens Ark and enjoy an amazing day among our wild animals! We offer adventures you can’t find anywhere else. Together with your camp leader, you’ll be doing things no ordinary visitor to Nordens Ark gets to do.

The language on the different camps are Swedish.

Go Wildest

Over two intensive days you’ll learn a huge amount about the endangered animals at Nordens Ark. You’ll help us feed or exercise wild as well as domestic animals.
Even in the summer holidays when the nights are bright, we still need to sleep. We do it the natural way in shelters we’ve built ourselves in the forest. At the campsite, we’ll cook food over an open fire, and as darkness falls, a few ghost stories are usually told around the camp fire. Then it’s off on a evening stroll in the park, where we’ll check on what the wild animals are up to. After a few hours’ sleep, it’s time for a new adventure-packed day.

Time: Day 1 starts at 9am and the camp finishes at 3pm.
Ages: 10 – 13 years
Dates for 2017:   29-30/6, 13-14/7, 27-28/7
Price: 2 410 SEK (including food on both days)

Go Even Wilder

A summer camp at Nordens Ark for those aged between 14 and 17 years. This two-day camp builds on our other adventure camps. It’s for those who want to try working as an animal keeper. Don’t forget to pack working gloves!

During the camp, you’ll learn a lot about conservation biology and care of endangered species. We’ll go behind the scenes at Nordens Ark’s feed kitchens and the animal care areas. You’ll get to meet several fascinating species as we feed them or provide enrichment in their enclosures. Enrichment is a way of encouraging the animals’ natural behaviour and is very important for their wellbeing.

We’ll stay in wooden shelters in the forest and cook food over an open fire. As night falls, we’ll sit around the fire and talk about the day’s experiences before heading off into the park for a glimpse of the predators in the darkness. After a little sleep, we’re ready for another day.

Time: Day 1 starts at 9am and the camp finishes at 3pm.
Ages: 14 – 17 years
Dates for 2017: 3-4/8
Price: 2 410 SEK (including food on both days)

Experience two awesome days among the wild animals – join a Nordens Ark summer camp!

Land and Sea

Land and Sea is a three-day summer adventure for those looking for something a little extra. Come diving with us off the coast, and join us on land among the endangered animals at Nordens Ark. Find out how echinoderms are able to regenerate lost body parts, and about the snow leopard’s multi-function tail.

At Havets Hus (Ocean House) in Lysekil, we’ll explore along the banks of the Gullmar fjord and check out starfish, octopuses and sharks in the aquariums. We’ll even get to feed the animals, then sleep in front of Havets Hus’s 40,000-litre aquarium. A boat will take us out on a seal safari before the adventure continues back at Nordens Ark. Here you’ll get acquainted with both wild and domestic animals. We’ll feed the animals and give them some enrichment in their enclosures before building our own camp in the forest and cooking food over an open fire. When it’s dark, we’ll go off on a thrilling evening walk.

Time: The camp starts at the entrance to Havets Hus at 10am and finishes at 12pm at the entrance to Nordens Ark.
Ages: 10 – 13 years
Dates 2017: 20-21/7
Price: 4 150 SEK
