Wels catfish

Silurus glanis

The Wels catfish is the largest freshwater fish in Europe. It is a bottom-dweller and lives at a depth of down to 30 metres. For breeding to be successful and the brood to develop normally, water temperature must be above 22 °C.

The body is long and narrowing with a thick, muous and scaleless skin. The head is broad and flat. The mouth is wide with small teeth, two long barbels on the upper jaw and four shorter barbels on the lower jaw. The back is dark with grey spots and the belly is greyish-white.
