Strawberry Poison Dart Frog

Oophaga pumilio

The strawberry poison dart frog is a small but highly colorful species found in the rainforests of Central America. Its coloration varies between populations, ranging from red and blue to orange, yellow, or green.

Vikt: 2 gram
Längd: 17-24 mm

The frog's bright colors act as a warning to predators. It produces toxic alkaloids from its diet, making it distasteful and dangerous to eat.

Male strawberry poison dart frogs are known for their territorial behavior. They call to mark their territory, and if another male responds and approaches, it often results in a wrestling match that can last up to 20 minutes.

This species is active during the day and usually stays close to the forest floor. While mostly solitary, they gather to breed. The female lays her eggs on land, and when they hatch, she carries the tadpoles on her back to water-filled plants. There, the tadpoles are fed with unfertilized eggs until they develop into frogs.
