Vietnamese Crocodile Newt

Tylototriton vietnamensis

The Vietnamese crocodile newt is a unique species found only in northern Vietnam. It was discovered as recently as 2005 and is known for its dark body with bright orange markings and rough, crocodile-like skin—traits that inspired its name.

Vikt: 15-30 gram
Längd: 12 cm

This species lives in highland forest areas, in and around small water bodies surrounded by dense bamboo vegetation. During the rainy season, the newts breed in these pools, while in drier periods, they spend more time on land.

Major threats to the species include habitat loss due to deforestation and land conversion for agriculture. Collection for traditional medicine and the international pet trade also poses serious risks. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this fascinating species and its habitat.
