Adder

Vipera berus

The adder is Scandinavia’s only poisonous snake. Its venom has two functions: to kill prey and to help break down food.

Length: 65 - 80 cm

When the adder leaves its winter nest at the end of March, it is normally lethargic and spends a few weeks warming itself in the sun. The males then shed their skins before mating begins. Afterwards, the snakes return to their territories, where they mostly live alone.
