Burmese star tortoise

Geochelone platynota

The distinctive, star-shaped pattern on its highly domed shell makes the Burmese star tortoise easy to recognise. Sadly, this beautiful shell also made the species highly sought after on the illegal market, and by the late 1990s, it had almost disappeared from the wild.

The Burmese star tortoise lives in dry, grassy deciduous forests and shrublands in Myanmar. Its diet consists mainly of grasses and plants.

Females lay their eggs during the cooler season, between September and February. The eggs then hatch with the arrival of the monsoon in June.
