Elongated tortoise

Indotestudo elongata

This tortoise has a long shell varying in colour from yellow-brown to olive green. The head is strong with strong jaws and a slightly protruding snout. Both sexes have a yellowish tone on their heads, hence the name.

Vikt: 3,5 kg
Längd: 35 cm

The elongated tortoise is active during dawn and dusk. During the day, it avoids high temperatures by hiding in dense vegetation in deciduous forests. Its diet consists primarily of leaves and fruit, but it also occasionally eats fungi, snails, and worms.

Over the past 90 years, the population of elongated tortoises has declined by 80%. The species is primarily threatened by illegal trade for food, as well as habitat loss caused by deforestation.
