Malaysian giant turtle

Orlitia borneensis

This is one of Asia's largest hard-shelled freshwater turtles. The smooth and oval shell is solid black or dark brown, while the abdominal plate is light yellowish brown or white. The head is strong with strong jaws and a slightly upturned snout.

Vikt: 50 kg
Längd: 80 cm
The Malaysian giant turtle is well adapted to a life in water. The feet are large and paddle-like with webbed feet between the claws.
Although the species is protected by law within its range, it is still hunted. Mainly for the meat but also for using parts of traditional Asian medicine. The fact that their habitats are destroyed when forests are cleared and rivers are dammed to make way for palm oil plantations are also major problems.
