Pig-nosed turtle
Carettochelys insculptaThe species is basically fully aquatic and well adapted to a life in water with its well-developed fins and streamlined shell.
The sex of a turtle egg is determined by temperature; higher temperatures give females and lower gives males. Hatching is triggered by heavy downpours or flooding of the nest.
The special appearance with the long, soft, slightly pig-like snout makes the species very popular in the exotic pet market. The current distribution suggests that the species has roots from a time when Australia was united with New Guinea.
