Southern river terrapin

The northern river turtle is a large turtle with broad webbed feet. The large shell is smooth and in the females the shell and body are olive-grey/brown. The head is gray or white. During the mating season, the males acquire a characteristic pink and jet black coloration.

The species lays its eggs in sandbanks, which then hatch after 65 days. The eggs are highly sought after for consumption and are seen as a delicacy.
The number of northern river turtles has decreased by 90% in recent 75 years. Today, fewer than 100 individuals are feared to remain in the wild.
