Spotted pond turtle

Geoclemys hamiltonii

The spotted pond turtle has yellowish-white dots on the head, legs and shell. The head is relatively large and the strong jaws are effective in handling food such as snails and crustaceans.

Vikt: 6 kg
Längd: 40 cm

The female lays eggs in two batches. Each time, 18-30 eggs are laid. The nest is built in clayey soil and the eggs hatch at the beginning of the rainy season (May-June).

In winter, the species stays hidden under bushes, aquatic plants or dry leaves. In the summer, it lives in stagnant water and sunbathes on logs, rocks or on the shore.

The species was previously threatened by locals gathering for food. Nowadays, the illegal pet trade and habitat destruction are the biggest threats.
