The number of individuals in the wild has decreased drastically, partly due to intensive hunting that has been going on for decades. Deforestation is another reason why the species is so endangered today. Every year, a large number of three-banded boxed turtles are bred on turtle farms in China to be sold at food markets. However, the demand for wild specimens is still high.
